The history of Barbie arrives this weekend
Get ready to step back into your childhood this winter as the New York State Museum welcomes Barbie™: A Cultural Icon Exhibition to its West Gallery from December 6, 2025, through March 8, 2026.
This remarkable exhibition celebrates more than six decades of Barbie as a cultural powerhouse, featuring over 300 priceless artifacts that trace the evolution of this multi-generational icon. Visitors will get an up-close look at the very first 1959 Barbie doll, an original Barbie Dreamhouse, behind-the-scenes prototypes, and some of the most memorable dolls throughout Barbie's 64-year history.
More than just a toy, Barbie has been a reflection of our culture—a role model, a muse, and a best friend who means something different to everyone. The exhibition explores how Barbie has made history, broken boundaries, and mirrored fashion trends and cultural moments from each era.
Exclusive designer interviews offer insight into the creative process behind the iconic doll, while numerous photo opportunities throughout the exhibition provide perfect shareable moments for visitors of all ages.
Whether you grew up with Barbie or are discovering her influence for the first time, this exhibition offers a fascinating journey through the making of a global icon.
