Join Fort Ticonderoga for a two-day living history event October 25-26 and experience life for captured British soldiers and their families with their harrowing stories as prisoners of war. Following American victories at forts along the Richelieu River in the fall of 1775, British soldiers and their families were caught in a rapidly developing conflict and faced an uncertain future as they were marched south to Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Explore their perspective during this living history event a glimpse into their tenuous situation as prisoners of war, even before American patriots declared independence.
Highlighted programming throughout the weekend uncovers the complexities of capturing prisoners in this new war and the challenges faced by the once common kindred. Become immersed in details of daily life for British prisoners, from living off Continental Army rations, to travelling on foot and by boat, all under American guard. See how rank and class transcended sides, as officers from the British and Continental Army enjoy the company of their fellow Englishmen, separate from soldiers.

11:00 a.m. Musket Demonstration (North Wall of Fort Ticonderoga) Explore the many flintlock arms carried by American soldiers at Ticonderoga in 1775. Discover the surprising discipline of New England and New York soldiers as they prepare themselves to face British regulars in Canada.
12:30 p.m. “No Person May Forget the Rights of Mankind and the Principles of Englishmen” (Begins at the American Flag) Experience Fort Ticonderoga in the fall of 1775 and the Continental Congress’s vague authorization “to take possession” of Canada. Explore the complexities and challenges that Major General Philip Schuyler overcame by October of 1775 while managing the arrival of British Prisoners at Ticonderoga from their capture in Canada.
12:45 p.m. Fife and Drum Parade to the Shore of Lake Champlain (Begins at the American Flag) March along to the sound of fifes and drums and follow Major General Philip Schuyler down to the shores of Lake Champlain to greet American boats coming up the Lake from Canada. 1:00 p.m. The British Prisoners of War Arrive (Carillon Boat Dock near the King’s Garden) Witness British Prisoners of War and their families recently captured at St. John and Chambly arrive at Fort Ticonderoga. Discover the Continental Army’s reception to these captives before forwarding them along to Connecticut.
2:30 p.m. My Dinner with André? (Mars Education Center Great Room) From mid-October through December of 1775, hundreds of British prisoners and their families streamed south along the Champlain Valley and through Ticonderoga to captivity. Join Fort Ticonderoga Curator, Dr. Matthew Keagle, to explore a reported encounter between Henry Knox and John André in the midst of this movement and follow his approach to unraveling the past.

1:00 p.m. “Proceed With the Prisoners with All Possible Dispatch” (Begins on the Parade Ground) Witness the parole of captured British officers allowing them to visit their families in territories occupied by the Continental Army while the rest of the British prisoners with their wives and children prepare for their journey to Connecticut. See these prisoners draw provisions and load their baggage as American soldiers prepare to escort them south. 2:00 p.m. Cannon Demonstration (Demonstration Area) See the first captured cannons from recent victories at St. Jean and Chambly dragged and scaled by Ticonderoga’s garrison. Discover the process of cleaning cannons with gunpowder and how Ticonderoga’s guns reached much farther than their shot.
