How you can help during nesting season
Vermont's turtles are at risk during nesting season, as they often lay eggs in dangerous locations like gravel parking lots and road shoulders. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is asking the public to help protect these turtles by being cautious while driving and assisting them across roads when necessary. Turtle nesting activity peaks between late May and June, so drivers are urged to keep an eye out for turtles, especially near ponds, rivers, and wetlands. If you encounter a turtle on the road, it is recommended to help it across in the direction it was traveling, but be cautious with snapping turtles, as they have a powerful bite.
